Ready to Listen : Ready to Act

12.07.05 Cardiff Post Article

I was pleased to attend the Wales Remembers 1939 - 1945 event on Sunday in Coopers Field in Cardiff.  It is very important that we remember everyone who helped to secure victory for us all during the war.  The veterans fought so courageously and we owe them an immense debt of gratitude.  It was so wonderful to see the veterans and their families marching with pride at the event which involved so many people in Wales.  Children were represented from all parts of Wales at the event, and enjoyed the service and the events which followed.  It is essential that the young people of today remember the sterling work which was undertaken during the war by the valiant heroes.

The Rhiwbina Festival Committee have been working overtime again!  The Festival Day was enjoyed by all in attendance, and offered an amazing choice of stalls and side shows.  One highlight for me was the powerful voice of a young lady who sang Last Night of the World from Miss Saigon.  What a poignant song and what a tremendous voice.  A big future ahead of the young lady I am sure.

Kelly Davies, aged 16, from Rhiwbina won the much coveted tile of Deputy Cadet of the Year for Wales.  Kelly beat off stiff competition from people from throughout the Principality to win this most prestigious award.  Congratulations.

Rhys Thorne, aged 9, also from Rhiwbina was presented with The Commendant in Chief Award for Outstanding Badger of the Year.  Rhys was presented with the award by HRH The Duchess of Gloucester at Priory House in Cardiff last week.  Congratulations.

The Rhiwbina Councillors this week launched the “Rhiwbina Community Awards.”  We were disappointed that the Council has still not responded to our calls for the Lord Mayor’s Community Awards to be reintroduced this year, especially as it is the Centenary Year.  Nominations are sought in the following categories for the awards :  Good Neighbour, Fundraiser, Carer and a Youth Award.  All nominees and recipients will be invited to a ceremony in October in Rhiwbina for the presentations.  All nominations must be received by Monday September 12th.  They can be sent to 198 Manor Way, Cardiff, CF14 1RN or E-Mail jcowan@cardiff.gov.uk or fax 029 2087 7005.
