NEW POOL FOR SPORTS VILLAGE

Detailed plans have been revealed for the new International Pool in Cardiff Bay.
It is a major milestone in the delivery of the Cardiff International Sports Village on an 80-acre site at Ferry Road.
The Council has submitted a detailed planning application which includes:
  • An international standard 50m swimming pool and 25m warm-up pool with spectator seating for 900;
  • A leisure water complex alongside the pool;
  • Health, fitness and spa facilities; and
  • High quality catering with open seating areas and south- facing sun terrace.
The pool will accommodate training for international swimmers and will have 10 lanes with a dividing boom and floating floor to control and manage the depth. Three 25m areas can be created across the pools for mixed swimming, leisure and sport uses.
The pool complex alone will provide more than 70 jobs with a projected 1.2 million users a year. It should be completed by the end of 2005.
It will be the first element of the £700 million Sports Village 10-year regeneration project based on the unique theme of Water, Snow and Ice.
Other proposals include a real snow indoor snowbox; multi-purpose arena and ice rink, and other exciting attractions linking into CardiffÂ’s colourful maritime and international heritage. High quality waterfront residences, hotels, casino, bars, restaurants and retailing are also planned. offering a full range of exciting facilities on the 80-acre site.
Cardiff Leader, Russell Goodway, said: "A new 50metre pool complex of an international standard has always been a key target for this Council and I am delighted that the process has been started to ensure that this will be achieved.
"This is a major step forward in the development of the Sports Village and demonstrates the CouncilÂ’s commitment to seeing that the project, which promises to be of huge economic and social benefit to the city, goes ahead as planned.
"When complete, this will unquestionably create one of the most exciting fully integrated waterfront resorts in Europe linked to a city centre already recognised as a major international destination."
