Ready to Listen : Ready to Act

Cardiff Post Article January 2007

Over recent months, my ward colleague Adrian Robson and I have been contacted by several older residents asking for information about services for older people. If residents have any further questions or need any information, please contact me and I will assist or put you in touch with the relevant Council officer or appropriate organisation.

The George Hill-Snook Charity for the Aged (Registered Charity) offers financial support for residents of Cardiff who are at least 60 years of age.  Grant applications will be welcomed for the purchase of a contribution to the purchase of essential furniture and personal items such as fridges, washing machines, cookers, some other electrical goods, bed, bedding and essential clothing.  Also household repairs, security fittings and disabled aids and minor adaptations and repairs.  To apply for a grant, please contact Age Concern on Cardiff 20521052.

For residents leaving hospital, there is a free service which is on offer called The Hospital Discharge Service.  This service is registered as a Domiciliary Care Agency with the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales and provides short-term flexible support to people over the age of 60.  If you take up this service, you will be visited by a settlement aide who is a paid worker.  They are trained to assist with most day to day tasks such as shopping, preparing a light meal, paying bills, collecting pensions, prescriptions etc. The settlement aide will also be able to contact other services on your behalf.  I am advised that this service operates 7 days a week between 9am – 5pm and an evening service during the week  is available and is subject to staff availability and the demand for the service.  Once again, please contact Age Concern for further details on this scheme using the number above.

My ward colleague Adrian Robson and I have a ward surgery on Monday 5th February between Noon – 1.30pm at the Butchers Arms Public House, Heol y Felin, Rhiwbina.  If residents are unable to attend and have any queries or problems, please contact us.
