Ready to Listen : Ready to Act

Cardiff Post Article September 2007

Sunday 30th September will be a very important, memorable and emotive day for the City of Cardiff.  A service will take place in Alexandra Gardens to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Falklands Conflict.

Martin Birch, Operational Manager for Bereavement Services for Cardiff Council, with responsibility for the maintenance and upkeeping of the City’s War Memorials stated, “The placing of this memorial is a significant event for Cardiff and Wales as a whole to ensure that those who so bravely gave their lives twenty five years ago will never be forgotten.  It has been a true honour and a privilege to work with Andy Jones of the South Atlantic Medal Association to make sure this project came to fruition.”

Cardiff Council, The National Assembly for Wales and the South Atlantic Medal Association worked together to aid the planning and construction of the Falklands War Memorial.  The planning of the memorial took over a year and is the first National War Memorial in recognition of the Falklands War Memorial in Wales.

The top piece of the memorial is a piece of rock brought over from Mount Harrier which was a significant battle ground in the Falklands Conflict.  This was given as a gift from the Falkland Islanders to the South Atlantic Medal Association.  This is a most fitting tribute to those brave persons who lost their lives 25 years ago.  The lower part of the memorial is clad with granite with the names of all the British Service personnel who lost their lives.  The granite also depicts scenes from the Falklands Conflict.

There is already a memorial in Alexandra Gardens honouring Cardiff Servicemen who died during the war.  There are also a number of trees planted in their memory.

My ward colleague Adrian Robson and I are staging a ward surgery at the Nine Giants Public House, Heol Llanishen Fach on Saturday 29th September between 10.30am – 12 Noon.
