Ready to Listen : Ready to Act

Cardiff Post Article July 2008

I was interested to learn that Cardiff Council will have a new elected member soon as a by election is being held on Thursday 31st July.  The one member ward of Pentrych has a vacancy following on from the resignation from the Councillor, due to ill health, who has been elected for only eight weeks.

The seat will be one to watch, as the result was close at the May Council elections.  We will see all the main parties throw huge resources into the seat to try and claim it as an addition to their present numbers.  Whoever wins the seat, however, will not change the numbers the parties need to claim ultimate power over the City.

The by-election means that Pentyrch and Gwaelod-y-Garth will become the centre of the political universe for several weeks. Residents can expect phonecalls, knocks on their doors and large amounts of literature through their letterbox as all the candidates try to put their message across and the local media will be spending much time in Pentyrch providing coverage and sounding out voters. Hopefully the efforts of all candidates will encourage electors to vote on polling day and a high turnout would give a good mandate for the new Councillor to represent their constituents. For those interested in standing as a candidate, more information is available from Electoral Services (part of Cardiff Council) on 02920 872 000.

The Rhiwbina Festival is in full swing, and will culminate in a wonderful day for all the family on Saturday July 5th, with many things happening around Pen y Dre and the village.  From show songs in the arena, to stalls and sideshows, there will be something for everyone!  If you fancy throwing wet sponges at a local headteacher, the community policeman, a local vicar and a local Councillor (me!) please come along to the festival.  For more details, please log on to my website www.rhiwbinaward.com

My ward colleagues Adrian Robson, Brian Jones and I are holding a Juice Morning and Surgery on Festival Saturday (5th July) outside Rhiwbina Library on Pen y Dre between 11am – 1pm.  Please pop along for some refreshments and a chat.
